Tape loops pulled out of cassette players and wrapped round shapes. Drag shapes to change the loop. Further away means a longer loop, and longer loops wobble more.
Corners are beats. Every sharp turn the tape makes knocks once per lap. A circle runs smooth, a triangle plays three, a star clatters. Surfaces: a sunken white well is slick, a raised key grabs and darkens, a pressed-in key crackles, a tall key flutters. Click a shape to change it.
Tension. Slack tape wanders in pitch, dulls and lifts off the head. Taut tape runs clean and wears quicker. Warble sets how far the speed sways, and wave its shape: wander drifts at random, sine and triangle swing evenly, stretch and snap pulls slowly then lets go, lopsided leans one way, hop jumps between speeds.
Neighbours. Playing decks shake the desk and drag nearby motors. Crossed tapes rub, hiss and print a ghost of each other.
Cam. A ridged wheel the tape rides over. Each ridge lifts the tape to a note in the desk's key, so a tone becomes a slow melody and a recording bends onto the same notes. Turn sets the speed. Rewrite sets how often it changes a note each time round. Click a note to change it. Midi lets a keyboard play it, in the desk's key: play follows the keys you hold, learn writes each key into the next note.
Echo head. A second head further down the tape. It repeats whatever passes, timed to a fraction of the loop, and the repeats darken as the tape wears. Repeats sets the feedback, time sets roughly how far apart.
Prism. Splits a tape into its fifth, octave and twelfth, each fading in and out on its own slow cycle. Spread sets how much, drift sets how fast they move.
Key to the notation.
Sounds. Public-domain (CC0) field recordings from Freesound, cut into short excerpts and levelled: thank you to felix.blume, IceVFX, inchadney, JW_Audio, keweldog, richwise, RutgerMuller, Sadiquecat, SamsterBirdies, SecureSubset, Sheyvan, TimBahrij, Trautwein. Sine and triangle are steady drones made here; the tape is what changes them.
Wear. Each lap adds crinkles. Worn through, a loop snaps. Splice it.
